How does the AI in exam marking work?

Get a breakdown of how our AI in marking helps you learn 🙌

Written by Hannah Acutt

Up Learn’s exam practice questions use a self-marking system supported by AI-powered walkthroughs. The aim is to help you practise exam-style questions properly while also understanding exactly how marks are awarded.

This approach is currently available on most exam practice questions.

Where can I find AI ‘Check self-marking’?

Just complete one of our Exam Question Walk-throughs, found under Exam Questions on your course.

Once you’ve finished marking a question, use the AI ‘Check self-marking’ feature to review your grading and make sure you’re on track 💪

How should I approach using AI ‘Check self-marking’?

1. Work through the question first

When you open an Exam Question Walk-through, you’ll be prompted to answer it on paper before doing anything else 📝

This step is intentional. Writing your answer first helps you engage with the problem properly and builds stronger understanding than jumping straight to the answer.

2. Reveal the mark scheme

Once you’ve attempted the question, submit your answer to unlock the exam-style mark scheme.

✅ Each mark point is shown clearly

✅ You can compare your answer directly against what the exam expects

3. Understand the reasoning behind each mark

Under each mark point, you’ll find step-by-step explanations that guide you through the correct method.

These explanations are designed to show you why an answer works, not just what the answer is. This is especially helpful when you’re unsure or have made a mistake, as it helps you correct your thinking for next time 🤓

4. Mark your own work

After reviewing the mark scheme, you assess your own answer by ticking the marks you think you achieved 👌

Your total updates automatically as you go. This process relies on honest self-assessment, which is a key part of building awareness of your strengths and areas to improve.

5. Check and review your marking

Once you’ve finished marking, click “Check self-marking” 💡

🤖 Your marks are reviewed by a system fine-tuned on expert examiner marking

🔍 If your marking looks inaccurate, you’ll be notified with an explanation of why an examiner might not award full marks

✏️ You’re encouraged to adjust your marks based on this feedback

📌 You can still choose to keep your original marks, and both versions will be recorded

Once complete, you’ll see a “Marks verified” confirmation.

What happens after I complete a question?

After finishing, your progress is automatically recorded.

✔️ Completed questions are marked with a green tick in your exam practice list

⏱️ Your study time is tracked

How does the ‘Check self-marking’ help me learn?

Self-marking is particularly useful for open-ended written questions, such as those in A Level Science and Economics. These questions often require judgement rather than a single correct answer.

It helps you:

🧠 Build exam-ready thinking by working with real mark schemes

🔍 Understand how marks are awarded, not just the final solution

🤖 Benefit from AI-supported feedback that reflects expert marking

📈 Develop the ability to evaluate and improve your own work

This system is designed to help you practise effectively, learn actively, and steadily build confidence for exam success.
