Up Learn guides your child through their course step by step, helping them build understanding and track their progress as they go. Below is an overview of what your child does on the platform and how you can understand their progress 🌟
How does my child work through the course?
They will complete a range of activities designed to teach, test, and reinforce their understanding.
The main activity types are:
📹 Video lessons – These explain key ideas clearly, with questions built into the videos to keep your child engaged.
🤔 Progress quizzes – These check how well your child has understood the videos they’ve watched.
If your child has an A level course, they’ll also have access to:
✍️ Exam questions – These help your child practise applying their knowledge at exam level.
📝 Exam papers – These bring everything together and give realistic exam practice under exam-style conditions.
Each section includes a mix of these activities to build understanding of a particular topic or concept. As your child completes them, they earn:
📊 Percentage scores, based on how many answers they get right
🌟 XP (experience points) as a reward for completing work
⏱️ Minutes to show how long they spent on each activity
Your child’s hours spent is made up of the active time they’ve spent revising on the platform, so any breaks or incomplete activities won’t count towards them.
How does my child complete a section?
To complete a section, your child needs to achieve a section score of at least 80%, shown as green. This means they have a solid understanding of that section.
They can reach this by:
📝 Completing the section quiz or pre-video quizzes (correct answers here automatically improve related activities)
✅ Attempting any remaining activities in the section
💪 Using Strengthen to fix mistakes and improve incorrect answers
We recommend students complete and master 1-2 sections per week 💡
What do the coloured rings mean?
Each section has a coloured ring that shows how well your child is doing, based on the percentage of questions they’ve answered correctly at least once:
🔴 Red – Below 50%
🟡 Amber – 50–79%
🟢 Green – 80% or above
Green means mastery ✅
Your child should aim to get green as soon as possible. If they don’t reach it the first time, they can use Strengthen to improve their score, and later Refresh Knowledge to keep it green.
How does Up Learn help my child remember what they’ve learned?
If your child doesn’t revisit content, they can start to forget it — this is known as memory decay ⌛
This usually begins around 7 days after a section is completed.
Up Learn helps prevent this with Refresh Knowledge, which:
🔄 Selects questions from sections your child studied a while ago
✅ Brings section scores back up to green when questions are answered correctly
We recommend doing Refresh Knowledge sessions regularly to keep course decay less than 5%. Read more about combatting memory decay here.
How can I tell how prepared my child is for exams?
A student who has all sections in green (mastered) has shown strong understanding across the course.
Each course also has an overall score called the Up Score, which combines all their section scores, along with exam paper performance for A level students.
🌟 An Up Score of 90% indicates your child is working at an A/A level* for A levels and 8 score for GCSE
👏 Encouraging your child to monitor this score throughout the year can help them understand how exam-ready they are
This score is one of the clearest indicators of your child’s progress and confidence heading into exams.
