We don't provide an option for captions on our videos - but let me explain a little more about how and why Up Learn videos do not have subtitles.
We learn through two main channels, visual and auditory.
Auditory learning happens when we hear information. If two people speak to you at the same time the auditory channel is overloaded. Your brain isn't able to process the both sets of information at the same time. You will either end up listening to only one person, or not listening to either๐
Another problem we come across is the split-attention effect. This is when the brain tries to process visual information from too many sources. The effect is that we only take in some of the information and miss the rest. This makes learning takes a lot longer and is more effort! ๐
We have found that our students learn best when a modality effect is created. In this context, it just means that presenting images with spoken text is more effective for learning than presenting the same pictures with written text ๐คฏ
Hearing what you are seeing is almost like learning twice because you're using both cognitive channels. This speeds up learning and makes it easier to recall the information later! Win-win!๐
What if I need subtitles for my access needs?
We do understand that in many cases subtitles are useful or essential to help meet access needs. We are working on adding the functionality to our videos, but in the meantime, you can turn on Live Captions in Chrome.
